Background
evermore is the nineth studio album by American singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift, and the sister album to her previous eighth studio album, folklore. Released on December 11, 2020 by Republic Records, it is the third album that Swift owns in its entirety. Swift announced the album by surprise just hours before the album’s release and like its predecessor, Swift via Instagram posted nine pictures that depicted the album’s cover. Most of the songs on the album were conceived by Swift and previous collaborator, Aaron Dessner, during the making of the folklore: the long pond studio sessions documentary.
Like its predecessor, the album consists of alternative rock and folk-pop sounds while also consisting of chamber rock sounds as well. Swift also collaborated once again with Bon Iver on one of the tracks on the album and also with the National band, who Dessner is a member of, and Haim.
The album was a commercial success debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Swift’s eighth consecutive album to debut on the top of the chart and her second number one album in 2020. This also made Swift the third woman to have eight number one hit albums, behind Madonna and Barbara Streisand. The album also broke the Guiness World Record for shortest gap between number one albums by a woman on the Billboard 200, with 140 days between folklore and evermore. Swift also dethroned her own album, folklore, on the Adult Alternative albums chart as the album debuted at number one on the chart.
A physical deluxe edition of the album was released on December 18, 2020 with two bonus songs. The deluxe edition was later released for digital download and streaming on January 7, 2021. On June 3, 2021, Swift announced a fan edition with a bonus remix of the opening track and four limited time autographed alternate covers of the album when the album broke the record for biggest week in vinyl sales.
Singles
To promote the album, three singles were released from the album. The lead single, “willow”, was released on the same day as the album, along with its music video. The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Swift’s third song to debut at number one, right after “cardigan” from the previous album, seventh number one song in the US and her second chart topping song in 2020 simultaneously. “no body, no crime” was released as the album’s second single on January 11, 2021 and it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, making it Swift’s second top ten hit on the chart in 2020, right after “betty” from the previous album. The third and final single to be released from the album was “coney island” on January 18, 2021.
