Background
The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It was released on April 19, 2024 by Republic Records, the album consists of sixteen tracks with four different bonus seventeenth tracks on physical releases of the album, which were released both exclusively to Swift’s official store and exclusively to Target stores. Swift also released several digital and physical copies of the album containing eleven different live performances, four phone demos of songs (digital only) and acoustic versions of five of songs (physical only) from both the standard and Anthology edition of the album. The Anthology edition of the album, making the album Swift’s first double album, was released two hours after the midnight release of the standard album and consisted of the four bonus tracks released exclusively to Swift’s official store and Target, as well as eleven other tracks that were written for the album. On October 15, 2024, Swift announced that she would be releasing The Anthology edition of the album to vinyl and CD exclusively to Target stores on November 29 and that it would include four bonus acoustic tracks.
The Tortured Poets Department consists of mainly synth, folk and chamber pop songs and was inspired by Swift’s tumultuous relationships and the public perception of her celebrity. Swift once again collaborated with longtime collaborator, Jack Antonoff who co-wrote ten songs and produced fifteen songs on the album along side Swift. Aaron Dessner, who Swift worked with on both folklore and evermore, as well as “Hits Different”, “The Great War”, “High Infidelity” and “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” on Midnights, also collaborated with Swift on the album, co-writing fifteen songs and producing seventeen songs on the album with Swift. Post Malone and Florence + the Machine are featured on the album with Malone featured on the album’s lead single, “Fortnight”, and Florence + the Machine appearing on “Florida!!!”. Both artists co-wrote their respective songs that they appeared on. Swift wrote five songs on the album solo.
The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200 becoming Swift’s fourteenth number one consecutive album and spent twelve consecutive weeks at the top of the charts making Swift the first female solo act to do so. Swift also became the first artist to have 14 songs to occupying the entire top 14 simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in chart history. Swift also set the record for most simultaneous entries by a female artist (32) and became the first woman to surpass 50 career top-10 songs.
