Midnights is the tenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Released via Republic Records on October 21, 2022 the album was met with critical acclaim. Swift first announced the album after winning Video of the Year at the 2022 MTV Music Video Awards. Swift has stated that the album is a concept album about nocturnal contemplation and inspired by “13 sleepless nights” throughout her life. The album features collaborations with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, whom Swift has worked with since 1989. It is the first time that Antonoff is marked as the main collaborator on the album. Aaron Dessner, who worked previously with Swift on folklore and evermore, also appears as a collaborator on four songs, one on the Target exclusive “Lavender Edition” and three on the “3am Edition”. The album features guest vocals by Lana Del Rey and new collaborations with Jahaan Sweet, Keanu Torres, Mark Spears, Sam Dew and Zoë Kravitz. William Bowery (Joe Alwyn) also collaborates with Swift on one track on the album. The album also marks Swift’s return to a more pop-oriented sound with electronica, synth-pop, bedroom pop, chill-out and dream pop. Its subject matter contains confessional yet cryptic lyrics, discussing self-criticism, self-assurance, insecurity, anxiety, and insomnia.
A “Lavender Edition” was released exclusively to US Target stores, with the physical CD including 3 bonus tracks, one bonus song and two remixes of songs on the standard album. At 3am EST on the album’s release day, Swift released seven extra songs from the album that didn’t make the original cut of the standard 13-track album dubbing them as “3am tracks”, similar to the “From The Vault” tracks released on her re-recordings of her albums, calling the entire 20 track version the “3am Edition”. Apple Music versions of the standard album included an 8 second “Meet me at midnight” track of Taylor describing the album.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Swift’s 11th consecutive album to top the chart. The album broke Spotify’s record for most single-day streams of an album and topped the charts in 25 territories, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It sold over 1.5 million units in the US alone making it the fastest and best-selling album of 2022. The album also logged the highest vinyl sales of the 21st century, as well as having 10 songs on the album simultaneously top the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Swift the first artist in the history of the chart to command the first 10 top spots on a single album, as well as the most of any album in a single week.
“Anti-Hero” was released as the album’s first single on October 21, 2022 and debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the same week as the album, making the song Swift’s fourth song to debut at number one alongside it’s album release, following “cardigan” on folklore, “willow” on evermore and “All Too Well” on Red (Taylor’s Version).
